"So, a part of this 'legion' moves to retrieve an object that will benefit them. I doubt it will do them much good, but it seems like an attempt to stop them should be made. How many did you say there were?"

"Well, it's clear these legionaries aren't going to leave us alone in the long term, and they should be sent to their final rest below. If we move against them what resources can each of you bring?"

Re: "Stay Back"
Aubrey shrugs. "I am not familiar enough with the enemy to know what resources are needed to stop them."
He pauses a moment before sighing.
"More to the point, I am not certain they should be stopped. If I understand the varied reports correctly, Baron John's ghost directs this so called legion. In all honesty, my friends, if he still maintains his faculties after death, I am more inclined to aid him than stop him."

Re: "Stay Back"
"I mean in any goals he has. In each effort he deems worthy. Death has never ended the loyalty and service of a Ventrue in the past, I see no reason to expect it to have done so now."
He shrugs.
'If it can be confirmed that His Excellency maintains his faculties and remains uncorrupted, why would I not aid him, and thus his legion, as I do all Ventrue? If you wish to convince me this is the enemy, here is your chance.'
He shrugs.

"These are two separate matters. If your kinsmen's death needs to be avenged then you should make sure that is seen to completion. The lost souls of these soldiers deserve to be sent on to the underworld where they can rest. They have openly claimed to seek the destruction of cainites until their grudge is avenged. If you wish this group to be left to their devices for the time being I will not pursue them this night, but the results of their actions rest with you."

Re: "Stay Back"
"Whether they are or not is of not consequence. Them and the late Baron John are lost souls that have not passed on as they should. That they seek to do harm to the world is yet another trespass against the will of the gods. As they are unable to accept or realize that they have passed, they need to be brought to their proper rest."

Re: "Stay Back"
Aubrey shakes his head.
"I disagree. I feel that is a question of great consequence. While I do not know enough about these ghosts to disagree with the assertion that they need to pass on, I am quite certain there are multiple ways to accomplish that goal. I am also quite certain that they do not all need to pass on immediately. Some could be allies against others, one would presume. If Baron John is here in some form, he and those in his service deserve respect and honorable treatment. At the least that begins with parley."
The Ventrue crosses his arms and taps his chin in thought.
"Here is my proposal: the two of you will escort me to them, and ensure we are able to communicate. We will ascertain their allegiance and purpose. If they serve Baron John directly and we are able to determine thus, we will offer to aid them in exchange for a parley with the Baron. There we will seek a way to assist this group in passing on without destroying them."

Re: "Stay Back"
"If you wish to speak to them and hope to turn them with reason and persuasion to pass on from this world, that is something that may be attempted. As you seem to be under a misapprehension, I have no intentions of destroying these men. They were honorable soldiers in life, and deserve honorable treatment now. However they do not belong here, by staying in this realm they defy the will of the gods. Attempting to work with them to gain use from them is to encourage such blasphemy and delay their arrival in the Fields of Elysium."

Re: "Stay Back"
"I would speak to them and hope to turn them with reason and persuasion, but rather than seek to turn this small group of soldiers - I would seek to cut the head off the snake with time. If this legion is, as is rumored, in service to Baron John, then it stands to reason that they would pass on beyond this life if their Lord were to do so."
He shrugs.
"If Baron John acts as he did in life, the roman concept of quid pro quo will be required to arrange a parlay. I see an opportunity here to help them acquire this "fetter", whatever that may be, and thus gain an audience with their leader. From there we can determine what is required to help him pass over, a goal which may well be shared by his men, accomplishing your goal for the whole legion."

Re: "Stay Back"
"He has already stated his claims. He seeks vengeance against those who brought about his death, a man who does not dwell in these lands but sent another to do his work. Since that goal is what ties him to this land it is not something one can talk him out of, and his impatience does not allow the time to seek out and punish the one who killed him before dealing with this matter."
:Mors pauses briefly:
"Lastly I do not believe the late Baron John leads this legion. Those who study such things indicated the legion has been around long before his passing, and has leaders beyond those we see here. He may command some of them, but as his purpose diverges from a common goal into personal vendetta, I do not think that bringing him peace of mind would bring any others to their rest.
Macleod, what are your thoughts? You are known to try a more peaceful approach in your dealings."

Re: "Stay Back"
Aubrey holds up a hand to forestall Macleod's response.
"That the Baron seeks vengeance is known to me. That said, there is ample reason to believe that he can not be reasoned with regarding his impatience. I understand that he has issued an ultimatum, but when a Ventrue is involved there is always room for negotiation.
As to Baron John not leading this legion, I cannot speak to that. What I can say is that the report indicates that these ghosts seek a belonging of Baron John's. This would imply they either seek it for him, or seek to steal from him. Which means that in dealing with these spirits we can either aid Baron John by helping them, or help those who would steal from him to move on, leaving him with less enemies. In either case this is an outcome that can be leveraged into a parlay with the Baron himself. That parlay is my goal, for a number of reasons, and by all accounts it should be yours as well - if only to convince him to pass beyond this realm or grant more time to bring his killer to justice."
Aubrey sighs.
"Yes, Macleod, what are your thoughts on the subject?"

Re: "Stay Back"
"Aye I know a bit about this legion. If it is truly Barron John who leads this portion he is not the first to do so. There is an entity that truly control them and I think he was given a battalion to command temporally either until his goal is reached or he is unable to lead. I did not know Barron John well enough to say for sure it was him or not. I will assume it is until I have proof otherwise."
McLeod seems to have fully calmed down.
"I was afraid this or something like it would happen. I had intended to form an order of fighters to combat such problems. Unfortunately it seems as if there are few who would willingly take up a blade to defend the greater good. Too few to be effective in such a vast domain."

Re: "Stay Back"
The Ventrue Lord smiles ruefully.
"There is a serious lack of ambition among the Cainites of Yorkshire, I have seen this. However, I think you underestimate the resources a single Cainite, or small group of us, can bring to bear. We three in this room alone are more than effective enough for the domain."
He sighs.
"The legion has not ceased it's march as we have spoken, and our intelligence on the supposed enemy does not grow as we stand here speaking. I will depart immediately for York Minster, there to seek out these legionnaires in the Northwest bell tower. I will attempt to communicate with them in the interests of better understanding their goals and allegiance. If aiding them can bring me to parley with Baron John, I will aid them. If there is any indication of danger to Yorkshire, Avalon, it's Cainites, or Baron John, I will attempt to prevent it. Who will travel with me?"

"As it stands I believe I have been marked and would hinder any hope to ally with them at this time. I can still feel a slight bit of what they did deep inside. though It shrinks slowly. If I had a night it probably would be gone."

"I do not think I could manage twenty of them, however I will accompany you to remove you from harm should they prove hostile and to assist in your attempt at communication. Should there prove to be a more manageable number I will not refrain from sending them to Hades if your attempts are unsuccessful."

Re: "Stay Back"
Aubrey nods. "That seems perfectly reasonable. Is there anything either of you can do to rid Macleod of this mark, or at least determine if it is there for certain? I am unconcerned with them recognizing him, more with him being gripped with fear or another effect again. Can we determine if he can safely enter their presence again? Perhaps on the way? I would rather not leave any behind.'

"I may not be able to go physically but if you are to go, I lend you my sword. It's been special crafted to be able to hurt wraiths. I see no other that can craft a blade as beautiful and deadly. I just ask it be returned to me when able. By next court I will have something more powerful."

Re: "Stay Back"
Aubrey narrows his eyes, looking the Brujah over carefully. He closes his eyes and meditates for a moment.
"I can detect no mark upon you. I think your might and experience far outweigh any risk due to past exposure. Let us all go and see to these would-be burglars."
With that, Aubrey throws his wine glass in the stone fire pit with a startling crash, and stands quickly. He drops a fairly heavy coinpurse on the table with another pointed cacophony and points to the door. His Ghoul, already positioned near the only exit, obligingly opens the door.
Standing outside of the Inn are three massive warhorses. They are fully saddled and stand at attention. Their reins are held by De Vere guardsmen, but it seems to be ceremonial. The animal's eyes gleam with intelligence, and they regard the Cainites knowingly through the doorway.
"Sir Mors, Sir Macleod, your steeds await."
